DAILY NEWS:NEWS: Pharmacy raided for selling painkillers to schoolchildren

This is in line with some of my own research. I knew this was happening across the island but could never get the info from the southern districts. However, I finally managed to get the data from the north using ex-LTTE women cadres. In the Mannar to Trinco belt, my findings affirmed that 90% of kids between the ages of 12 and 18 have taken some sort of drug and that 60% are addicted. My gut feeling is that it is similar in other areas. While this fellow has sold at Rs.400 most drugs (mostly brought in via South India but sourced elsewhere) sell at less than Rs.50 and one shot of it can keep a kid spaced out for 2-3 days. Having cigarettes retailing for Rs.50 and booze for Rs.1800 is a useless exercise given the new drugs that have come into the country.  If we don't do something about this NOW, sustainability be damned. We will be left with a country full of drug-addicts and prostitutes.

ARTICLE ALERT: I think it is high time we address this issue in the press although not directly related to SEMA work.
